Vietnam to gain most from Pacific trade pact: US official

vietnam to gain most from pacific trade pact us official

Vietnam will gain the most from the Trans Pacific Partnership that will be finalized this year, making the country’s major exports more attractive to world markets, an American trade official said.

Demetrios Marantis, Deputy US Trade Representative, told the media in Hanoi on February 24 that Vietnam could be the country to benefit the most from the TPP as the agreement will force it to raise the quality of major export items like garment and textiles, making them more valuable on the US and other markets.

Vietnam was the second largest seller of textiles and apparel to the US in 2011 after China, according to data from the US International Trade Commission.

“The challenge for the negotiators is to be able to realize something that will work well for both countries,” Marantis said. He cited the example of textiles, a major export interest for Vietnam, for which there are “import sensitivities” in the US.

Two-way trade between the US and Vietnam totaled $21.8 billion last year, according to US Commerce Department data.

TPP contains commitments to help Vietnam meet international quality standards in several important sectors, and hence the agreement will boost economic reform in Vietnam, Marantis said.

Negotiators from nine TPP member nations – Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the US and Vietnam – will meet in Melbourne for the 11th round of the negotiations between March 1-19.

Leaders of these countries had reached the broad outlines of the trade deal on the sidelines of an APEC meeting in Honolulu last November.

Marantis said three other countries in the region, Japan, Mexico and Canada have also showed interest in the agreement.

vietnam to dispute us anti dumping duties on frozen shrimp

Vietnam plans to dispute the US’s anti-dumping measures on its frozen shrimp.at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

A Vietnam News Agency report has said Vietnam has requested consultations with the US on the case.

Under WTO regulations, if the consultations fail to solve the dispute, Vietnam can ask the trade watchdog to establish a panel to rule on it, the report said.

So far the details of the complaint Vietnam filed with WTO have yet to be made available.

Vietnam made the move after the WTO concluded last July that the the method used by the US to calculate dumping margins were inconsistent with international rules and asked the country to stop such action.

In February 2010, Vietnam had filed a complaint with the WTO pertaining to the anti-dumping duties that US has levied on certain kind of frozen shrimp from Vietnam since 2005.

Hanoi travel agency boss arrested for alleged scam

hanoi travel agency boss arrested for alleged scam

The Hanoi police arrested Saturday the head of a US-based travel agency for allegedly cheating 73,000 people with offers of cheap luxury world tours that never materialized.

News website Dan Tri said Lam Phuc Hung, general director of Southeast Asian Diamond Holiday, has been taken in while board chairwoman Nguyen Thi Ai Dan is still at large.

It said Hung and Dan collected at least US$27.4 million from victims by telling them that they could stay for three to four days at luxury resorts around the world by paying a mere US$375.

They also allegedly defrauded people by offering cash bonuses of up to $15,000 for roping in more customers.

But neither the bonuses nor the foreign tour materialized, and when customers asked for at least a local tour for the money they had paid, the company refused.

Many then complained to the police, who carried out searches of Hung’s house and office Thursday.

East Asian Diamond Holiday is an affiliate of the US-based Diamond Holiday Travel Corporation, which also has operations in Hong Kong.

Investigations continue.

Hung has been detained for four months pending charges of fraud to appropriate others’ properties.

If convicted, the 53-year-old could face the death sentence, which is handed down for frauds involving more than VND4.5 billion ($217,000).
